International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a non-governmental organization that develops standards for business processes, quality, safety, and management systems for companies. The national standards bodies of different countries are its members; in India, this role is performed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Although ISO itself does not create laws, any country can adopt its standards.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) develops standards for the safety, testing, and power systems of electrical and electronic products. IEC is also a non-governmental organization, and each country is represented by its national committee; in India, BIS is its member.

ISO/IEC 17020:2012

The ISO/IEC 17020:2012 is an international standard which defines the competence requirements of the inspection bodies and guarantees impartiality, consistency and reliability of the inspection activities. This standard was developed by the International Organization of Standardization and International Electrotechnical Commission and is important in instilling confidence in the inspection services in the various industries.

To guarantee transparency and appropriate execution, inspection entities are divided into three types according to their independence and connection with involved parties:

Type A

A completely autonomous and unbiased third-party inspection authority that offers inspection services, but is not involved in the design, manufacture, supply, installation or maintenance of the items being inspected.

Type B

An inspection body is a section of an organization, which offers its inspection services to its parent organization only and is independent of its other operation.

Type C

A body that is involved in the design, manufacturing or maintenance process and may also offer inspection services to third parties, but any inspection must be used to ensure that third parties must have well-defined protective measures to promote objectivity.

Aleph India is now a Type A Inspection Body duly accredited as per ISO/IEC 17020:2012. The standard ISO/IEC 17020:2012 offers credibility to inspection bodies through transparency, consistency and technical reliability and as such, it is a necessary standard to organizations engaged in inspection and conformity assessment processes.
