What is a BIS certificate, and what does it mean?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is a government-run organization that ensures product quality, protection, and dependability in India. In order to test samples of products during preliminary and surveillance operations, BIS has established eight central, four regional, and three branch laboratories across the country. The government, therefore, encourages BIS Certification for the following reasons:
- to protect public health;
- to provide quality assurance;
- to protect consumers from dangerous products;
- and to promote consumer trust.
What is the BIS certification procedure like?
The BIS certification process often requires the following steps:
- Application.
- Product tests in India.
- Certification.
- Marking.
A factory inspection and follow-up testing may be needed, depending on the type of certification and the affected goods. If a factory inspection is required, the auditors can pick test samples during the audit, which will add several months to the certification process. On our BIS certification process page, you can also see which goods need an audit.
The certification provided by Aleph INDIA is valid for two years, but the duration of follow-up testing varies by product type. The classification of a product can be difficult, and it is best to verify each one individually.

As this mark is released after a thorough investigation, the quality and standards of products bearing the ISI mark are established.
What are the various BIS Registration Schemes In India for Product Certification?
- For domestic manufacturers, this is standard procedure:
An applicant must submit the Application for Certification under this particular scheme, along with the necessary documentation and the mentioned fee. The officers of the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) perform a preliminary inspection of the factory where the products will be produced, and the samples obtained are checked in approved laboratories. The officer in charge issues BIS Certification when the samples collected meet the necessary standards. Following the submission of the Application, this process usually takes four to six months to complete.
- Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers:
It is an easy method to receive BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Certification, as its name suggests. An applicant must submit the reports of his sample product obtained from a BIS-approved lab along with the Application for BIS Certification in this process. If the BIS Officer is satisfied with the results, he or she performs further verification on the premises to ensure that the protocols are followed. Finally, within thirty days of receiving the application, the officer issues the Certificate.
- Tatkal Scheme:
According to the government's announcement, some manufacturers/producers are required to obtain BIS Certification. In such a situation, the Tatkal Scheme is the only way to acquire a BIS License. Within thirty days, the application to enter the Tatkal Scheme must be processed. The application is then processed on a priority basis by the concerned department to meet the strict deadlines.
- Scheme of the Eco Mark:
The BIS Eco Mark scheme awards a Certificate for environmentally sustainable goods. Since there are other requirements to meet the Indian Criteria for Eco-friendly Goods, the manufacturer must perform well in all tests and adhere to the rules. Furthermore, obtaining a BIS Certificate under the Eco Mark scheme is identical to the process for obtaining a BIS Certificate under the Domestic Manufacturer scheme.
- Scheme for Certification of Foreign Manufacturers:
This program allows foreign/international applicants or manufacturers to use the BIS Standard Mark on their products. This method allows a person to obtain BIS Certification in as little as six months.
