By taking this into consideration, the existing Government decided to form a committee of a few members who all decided to work on the quality of goods and recognized that there should be a body that can monitor the quality of products, can protect end consumers from getting cheap products. This led to the establishment of the organization "Indian Standard Institute," which focused on standardization development.

process of standards formulation in india

The Process of Standards Formulation in India

  1. In India, standardization begins with submitting a proposal to BIS. Any organization like the Ministry of the Central Government, State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, consumer organizations, industrial units, industry-associations, professional bodies, and members of the Bureau and members of its technical committees can request BIS for establishing, revising, amending, or canceling an existing standard by giving written request.
  2. Division Council investigates the proposal.
  3. After investigating the proposal, if Division Council feels the need that the proposed proposal is beneficial for the consumer, then Division Council shall assign the drafted proposal task to a technical committee or appoint a new technical committee.
  4. The technical committee, while investigating, keeps in view national priorities, national development, technical need, consumer health and safety etc.
  5. The technical committee finalized the drafted standard giving due consideration to the comments that may be received. And for final approval, submit the proposal to the Chairman of the Division Council.

How ALEPH INDIA work on Standardization?

  1. Project Initiation - Project opening can begin with the request received from a manufacture who wants to cover his product under the Indian standards, in case Indian Standards for that product category is unavailable till date. The first step is to obtain the product's technical specifications along with a physical sample (in specific cases) so that we can begin preparing parameters that are required to be included in standards for that specific product category.
  2. Mobilize Action - After getting the product's technical details or physical sample, whichever is possible, our management and Engineers team organize the meeting to perform a thorough examination of the product's scope, features, specifications, and other relevant information. Proper planning and investigation are done.
  3. Drafting Standards - After studying and investigating all the features, the standard of a particular product/specific subject is drafted.
  4. Scrutiny - The drafted standard proposal is forwarded to the BIS. They will scrutiny the proposal for which a separate team of experts and engineers will be formulated to do the further examination for the request received.
  5. Final Approval - If BIS finds the proposal satisfactory, then BIS grants the approval for the proposal and standard formulation will be initiated.
  6. Publish - At last but not least, BIS publishes the standard, and further actions for its successful implementation are taken by the respective department officers.
