BIS Extension Order for the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy plate for general engineering purposes)
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Extension Order, 2026, which came into force on 11th March 2026.
As per this Order, all Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products must comply with the requirements specified under Indian Standard IS 736:1986. These products are required to bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid license issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
However, the Order provides certain exemptions:
- Products manufactured domestically for export purposes are exempt from the scope of this Order.
Further, Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, shall comply with the applicable Indian Standards as per the specified implementation timeline. The compliance dates differ based on the category of enterprise:
- General Enterprises: Compliance is mandatory from 01 December 2026
- Small Enterprises: Compliance is mandatory from 01 March 2027
- Micro Enterprises: Compliance is mandatory from 01 June 2027
The certification and enforcement authority for Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products as specified in this Order is the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Any individual found in violation of the provisions of this Order will face penalties as per the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
