UPDATES FOR FLAT TRANSPARENT SHEET GLASS

Important update regarding mandatory BIS certification requirements applicable to manufacture/imports/sales of product “Flat Transparent Sheet Glass “for the Indian market. The Central Government, after consulting the BIS Bureau of Indian Standards, is of the opinion that it is necessary or expedient to register Flat Transparent Sheet Glass with BIS.

“Flat Transparent Sheet Glass (Quality Control) Order, 2021 for transparent Sheet Glass through a gazette notification dated 7th October 2021. The Government of India and the Ministry of Commerce And Industry in India have come up with the latest regulation on Flat Transparent Sheet Glass goods. As per the document, flat transparent sheet glass goods are regulated, along with the implementation date and respective Indian standards. The Government of India has taken this step to protect the Indian consumer. Keeping the safety of consumer in mind, the government of India and BIS has made mandatory the BIS certification of this product for both Indian as well as foreign manufacturers of flat transparent sheet glass. No manufacturer can manufacture, import, store, sell or distribute this product in the Indian market without the Licence which is granted by the BIS Bureau of Indian Standard. Flat Transparent Sheet Glass shall conform to the Indian Standard IS 2835: 1987 and shall bear the Standard Mark under a licence from the Bureau as per Scheme I of Schedule-II of Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

This order will take effect on April 1, 2022, and will apply to the products or articles listed in column (1) of the table below, but it will not apply to goods or articles intended for export.

In short, a Mandatory ISI mark and BIS certification Licence is required for the product to be stored, imported and sold in India.

Implementation Dates: As per the notifications, the related goods/articles shall come under the mandatory BIS certification dated 1st April 2021
