BIS CERTIFICATION FOR AC WATTHOUR METERS
IS 13010:2002

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 13010:2002 for ac watthour meters, class 0.5, 1, and 2.

This standard only applies to induction type watthour meters with accuracy classes 0.5, 1, and 2 for measuring alternating current electrical active energy. It covers the assembly of meters and accessories, including current transformers, enclosed in the meter case. It does not apply to maximum demand indicators covered by IS 8530.

This standard applies to multi-rate meters but does not apply to other special types of meters or meters used for testing purposes covered by IS 11426. Meters are classified based on their respective class indices, such as 0.5, 1, or 2.

Meters must be designed and built in such a way that they do not pose a risk in normal use and conditions. The metre must have adequate mechanical strength and be able to withstand temperature fluctuations that are common in normal working conditions.

tests

The following test shall be carried out for ac watthours meters of class 0.5, 1, and 2.

  1. Type test
    • Insulation resistance
    • Running with no load
    • Starting
    • Power loss
    • Heating
    • Impulse voltage test
    • ac voltage test
    • Sustained accuracy test and so on
  2. Acceptance test
    • Insulation resistance test
    • Running with no load
    • Limits of errors
    • Test of meter constant
    • Repeatability of error and some other tests
  3. Routine test
    • Insulation resistance
    • Starting
    • Running with no load
    • Limits of error

Packing and marking shall be done in accordance with the standards. Every metre must display the information specified in the standard, and the metre can also bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
