BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL TAPE MEASURES AS PER IS 1269 (PART 2):1997

This Indian Standard (Part 2) specifies the requirements for steel tape measures, which are used for measurements where rigid length measures are neither practicable nor convenient. Steel tape measures must be made in nominal lengths of 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m, or 5 m or an integral multiple of 5 m, with a maximum nominal length of 200 m.

Under normal conditions of use, the length measure and supplementary devices must be made of suitable steel or stainless steel that is sufficiently durable, stable, and resistant to environmental impacts. Length measures and their associated devices must be well-built and finished. When stretched on a plane surface, the edges of the steel tape measure must be practically straight and parallel. The tape measure's edge should be slightly rounded. The Steel Tape measures must be constructed as per the requirements of applicable Indian standards.

Marking

Labelling and marking must be done in accordance with IS 1269 (Part 2) 1997. All products that meet the Indian Standard and are covered by the BIS license are required to bear the standard ISI mark. A BIS license forSteel Tape Measures of Length is granted to use the standard mark as per IS 1269 (Part 2) 1997.Each tape measure shall be legibly and indelibly marked with a nominal length in meters, an indication of the location of zero of the scale, the manufacturer’s name or trademark, anda class of accuracy.

To use a standard mark, the manufacturer must first get a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards for Steel Tape Measures. The Bureau issues BIS licenses to products that meet relevant Indian standards. BIS certification enables manufacturers in obtaining consumer trust and continues to export and sell their products in India.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
