Consuming fortified rice overcomes micronutrient deficiencies in people. The Government of India promotes the consumption of fortified rice through various social security programmes such as the Public Distribution System.

To strengthen the rice fortification ecosystem in the country, BIS has begun the development of Indian Standards, BIS certification for fortified rice and related commodities, and the equipment and machinery used to manufacture fortified rice to ensure consistent quality of final products. In this regard, IS 17854:2022 for blending units has been developed.

IS 17854:2022 covers the equipment used in the manufacture of fortified rice. This standard specifies the requirements for blending units and the types of blending units used to produce fortified rice.

This standard specifies the construction and performance requirements for Equipment for the Manufacturing of Fortified Rice. Depending on the capacity and requirements, the blending unit must be of the batch or continuous type. The materials for components must follow the specifications specified in table 1 of the standard.

Blenders can be of the following types: a) Continuous screw/ribbon blender; b) Drum blender; c) Continuous drum blender; d) Paddle blender; and e) Octagonal blender.

To obtain a BIS license for Equipment for Manufacture of Fortified Rice, the manufacturer must ensure that the equipment meets the construction and performance requirements specified in the standard. BIS certification for blending units is required to use a standard ISI mark and ensure that the equipment adheres to all applicable Indian standards.

BIS CERTIFICATION MARKING

Products that meet the requirements of this standard may be certified under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations framed thereunder, and products may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark).

Each equipment must be marked with the following information:

  1. The manufacturer's name or recognised trademark,
  2. Batch or serial number and date of manufacture,
  3. Nominal capacity,
  4. Construction material and its grade for each component,
  5. Proper safety signs.

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence for blending units to use the ISI mark and sell it in the Indian market.
