BIS CERTIFICATION FOR BUTTERFLY VALVES FOR GENERAL PURPOSE
IS 13095:2020

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 13095:2020 for butterfly valves.

IS 13095:2020 cover Butterfly valves for general purpose. This standard applies to double-flanged and wafer types of metal seated, resilient seated cast iron, ductile iron and carbon steel and lined butterfly valves for general purposes. This standard applies to valves that are operated manually, pneumatically, hydraulically, or electrically.

According to IS 13095: 2020, the following factors shall be considered for classifying Butterfly Valves for General Purposes.

(A) Service Application: Tight shut-off, Regulating, Low Leakage, and Vacuum condition

(b) Nominal Sizes

Group Nominal Sizes (mm)
Group I DN 40 upto and including DN 300
Group II DN 350 upto and including DN 600
Group IV DN 1400 upto and including DN 2000

(c) Nominal Pressure: PN 0.25, PN 0.6, PN 1.0, PN 1.6, PN 2.5 and PN 4.0

(d) Class Designation: Class 125/Class150/Class 300

(e) End Connections: Double Flanged Valves, Wafer Valves

Valves shall be designated by nominal pressure (PN). Each valve shall comply with nominal size, nominal pressure, and class designation. The dimensions of the flanged body end and drillings must meet the requirements specified in the standard. The body ends must be able to fit between pipe flanges that meet the criteria of the standard.

All valves must be able to operate at the specified differential pressure across the disc on the valve. Any suitable operator, such as a lever, worm gear travelling nut, can be employed. All valves must be hydrostatically tested by the manufacturer.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for butterfly valves.

  • Dimension test
  • Hydrostatics test
  • Performance test
  • Body test
  • Seat test
  • Disc strength test

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

IS 13095: 2020 specifies the criteria for labelling and marking. Standard Mark (ISI Mark) should be applied to every production that complies with Indian Standards and is covered by the license. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
