BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CARBON CHROMIUM STEEL
IS 4398:1994

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4398: 1994 for Carbon-Chromium Steel for the manufacture of Balls, Rollers, and Bearing Races.

This standard specifies the specifications for four types of high carbon chromium steel in the form of billets, bars, wire rods, wire, and rings for general use in the manufacture of ball and roller bearings.

The steel must be produced by an electric furnace process that is fully killed and vacuum degassed, or any other suitable process that meets the specified quality requirements. Each ingot must have a sufficient reduction and discard to ensure that it is free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects. At a suitable stage during reduction from the ingot to the finished size, the material may be conditioned to remove injurious surface defects by chipping, machining, grinding, or any other suitable means. IS 8910:1978 specifies the general requirements for material supply.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified in the standard.

  • Chemical composition
  • Hardness
  • Inclusion content
  • Decarburization and surface defects
  • Fracture test
  • Macro Etch test
  • Additional tests

marking:

Marking shall be done as per IS 4398:1994. Each bar, billet, wire, and wire rod shall be marked with the cast number or any other identification mark that allows the steel to be traced back to the cast from which it was made. A standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
