BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CARBON STEEL CAST BILLET INGOTS, BILLETS, BLOOMS & SLABS
IS 14650:1999

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 14650:1999 for carbon steel cast billet ingots, billets, blooms and slabs for re-rolling purposes.

This standard specifies the requirements for carbon steel cast billet ingots, billets, blooms, and slabs for rolling into various steel products in accordance with Indian standards. The requirements of this standard shall apply to billets, blooms, and slabs produced by the continuous casting process. This standard's requirements shall not apply to steel products for which a semi-finished material standard exists.

Steel shall be manufactured as per applicable standards. The steel shall be manufactured using any steel-making process specified by the manufacturer. Steel must be delivered semi-killed or killed. The chemical composition of steel must meet the ladle analysis requirements of the relevant finished product standard.

Any harmful defects, such as cracks, surface flaws, laminations, rough, jagged, and imperfect edges, must be avoided in billets, blooms, and slabs. A laboratory shall be maintained, suitably equipped and staffed, and in which the various tests specified in the standard shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified in the standard.

TESTS

The following tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Freedom from defects
  • Dimension and tolerances
  • Other tests

marking

Marking shall be done as per IS 14650:1999. Each cast billet ingot, billet, bloom, and slab must be stamped or painted with the cast number and the manufacturer's name or trade mark. All production that complies with the applicable standard should bear the standard mark (ISI Mark). To use a standard mark (ISI mark), the manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards. BIS will grant a licence after successfully assessing manufacturing infrastructure, manufacturing processes, quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to manufacturing premises.
