BIS CERTIFICATION FOR COLD ROLLED CARBON STEEL STRIPS
IS 12367:1988

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 12367:1988 for cold-rolled carbon steel strips/coils for the manufacture of the welded tube.

This standard specifies the requirements for cold-rolled annealed/skin passed carbon steel strip coils used in the production of the welded precision tube.

Cold-rolled carbon steel strips/coils can be produced using open-hearth, electric, acid Bessemer, duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes. Cold rolled carbon steel strip shall be manufactured as per the requirements of IS 12367. The finished strips/coils must be free of harmful defects such as scales, rust, blisters, laminations, pitting, porosity, cracked or torn edges, and any other flaws that would impair spot welding and the uniform appearance of the painted, enamelled, or electroplated surface. The general requirement for material supply shall be as per IS 8910:1078.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Tensile test
  • Reverse bend test
  • Cupping test
  • Strain ageing embrittlement test

Packing and Marking:

Packing & Marking shall be done as per IS 12367:1988. Coils must be securely packed in waterproof paper or hessian cloth and tightly tied with wooden battens underneath to prevent rusting and damage during transit. Coils must be marked with a steel grade, cast or identification mark, mass, manufacturer's name, or trade mark. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
