BIS CERTIFICATION FOR COLD ROLLED STEEL STRIPS
IS 2507:1975

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 2507:1975 for cold-rolled steel strips for springs. This standard specifies the requirements for cold-rolled steel strips used in the manufacture of springs for a variety of applications.

IS 1387:1967 Specifies General Requirements for the supply of steel strips. Steel shall be produced using an open hearth, an electric furnace, a duplex furnace, a basic oxygen furnace, or a combination of these processes. Steel must be of the killed variety.

Steel strips shall be one of the eleven grades as specified in the standard.

Strips must be free from harmful flaws such as scale, rust, blisters, laminations, cracked edges, and so on. When delivered, the surface of cold-rolled, annealed, or hardened and tempered steel strips can be dull, bright, polished, or polished and tempered. Appendix C of the standard specifies the physical properties of cold-rolled steel strips for springs. The chemical composition of the material must be as specified in the standard.

TESTS

All tests shall be performed in accordance with the method specified in the standard.

  • Freedom from defects
  • Decarburization
  • Edge condition
  • Chemical composition
  • Dimension & tolerances
  • Physical properties

Packing and marking:

Packing and marking must be done in accordance with IS 2507:1975. Strips must be packed in waterproof paper, polythene, or polythene-lined hessian and tightly tied with hoop iron. A number of coils can be bundled together with wooden battens or packed in wooden boxes. Strips can also be packed with separate thin metallic sheets wrapped around them and hoop iron bands.

Each bundle or package of steel strips must bear the manufacturer's name or trademark, size, grade, and cast number or identification mark. The material may also be marked with a standard mark (ISI mark). Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
