BIS CERTIFICATION FOR COPPER WIRE RODS FOR ELECTRICAL APPLICATIONS AS PER
IS 12444:2020

IS 12444:2020 covers Copper Wire Rods for Electrical Applications. This standard specifies the requirements for copper wire rods for electrical applications with nominal cross-sectional diameters ranging from 6 mm to 35 mm. This standard addresses the requirements for electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) and oxygen free copper (OFC) copper wire rods.

Copper Wire Rods for Electrical Applications are classified on the basis of the type of wire rod and the nominal diameter, which ranges from 6 mm to 35 mm according to IS 12444: 2020. Copper wire rod shall meet all the requirements of IS 12444:2020.

A BIS licence is granted to use standard mark as per IS 12444:2020. It is required to maintain a laboratory that is adequately staffed and resourced to conduct the various tests outlined in the standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out as per method specified in standard.

• Dimension and Tolerances
• Chemical Composition
• Tensile Test
• Electrical Properties
• Freedom from Defects
• Surface Test

Packing and Marking:

All the production which conforms to the Indian Standards and covered by the licence should be marked with Standard Mark. General requirements relating to the supply of material shall conform to IS 1387.The material shall be packed in coils as per standard. The coil shall be wrapped with polythene sheet.

To use a standard mark, the manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for Copper Wire Rods for Electrical Applications from the Bureau of Indian Standards. The Bureau grants a BIS license based on a successful assessment of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process. A BIS certification for Copper Wire Rods for Electrical Applications is required to ensure that the product meets the requirements of applicable Indian standards.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
