BIS CERTIFICATION FOR FLAT TRANSPARENT SHEET GLASS

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 2835: 1987 for Flat transparent Sheet Glass.

IS 2835: 1987 cover flat transparent Sheet Glass. This standard specifies the requirements and sampling and testing methods for flat transparent sheet glass used in the production of photographic plates, silvered glass mirrors, projection slides, toughened or laminated safety glasses, and for glazing and framing purposes.

Sheet glass is a transparent, flat glass with a glossy, fire-finished surface that appears plane and smooth but has a characteristic waviness.

According to IS 2835:1987, sheet glass shall be classified into four qualities:

  1. AA Quality or Special Selected Quality (SSQ) – Intended for use where superior quality safety glass, high-quality mirrors, photographic plates, projection slides, etc., are required.
  2. A Quality or Selected Quality (SQ) – Intended for specific glazing, mirror manufacturing, safety glass, and so on.
  3. B Quality or Ordinary Quality (OQ) – Intended for use in glazing and framing.
  4. C Qualify or Greenhouse Quality (GQ) – Intended for use in greenhouse glazing, manufacturing of frosted glass, flooring strips, and other applications.

Sheet glass must be flat, transparent, and clear. When viewed from the edge, it may have a light tint. It should be free from cracks. The nominal thickness, thickness range, and dimensional tolerance on cut sizes (length and width) of sheet glass must be as specified in the standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out for the glass sheet.

  • Dimension
  • Bow
  • Thickness
  • Scratches, Rubs and Crush
  • Reams, strings, and lines
  • Waviness test

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard. A separate sample must be tested for each quality.

Packaging and marking shall be done in accordance with the standard. Sheet glass packages must be labelled with the name and quality of the material, the nominal thickness, the name of the manufacturer or trademark, and a code or serial number in accordance with the standard. A standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the packaging. According to IS 2835, each package must be legibly marked with the required information. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
