BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HEAT RESISTING STEEL
IS 9516:1980

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 9516:1980 for heat resisting steel.

The requirements for three grades of wrought heat-resisting steels are specified in this standard. These steels are typically used in products where resistance to the effects of hot gases and combustion products at temperatures above 550°C is a primary requirement.

This standard does not cover the requirements for creep-resistant steels and valve steels for internal combustion engines. Unless otherwise specified, this Indian Standard applies to all types of hot-worked or cold-worked products supplied in the heat-treated state.

The general requirements for material supply shall be in accordance with IS 1387. This standard requires steel to be delivered in accordance with one of the requirement classes given in table 1 of IS 9516:1980. The material must be free of potentially harmful internal and surface defects. The finished product must be subjected to product analysis. Steel's mechanical properties must meet standard requirements. Dimensions and tolerances must be agreed upon at the time of inquiry and order.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Dimensional tolerance
  • Tensile properties
  • Hardness

Packing and marking:

Steel must be properly packed or bundled. Each packet or bundle must have a metal tag bearing the manufacturer's name and trademark, the steel grade, the cast number, or any other identification mark. The ISI mark may also be applied to the material.

The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
