Helmet for riders of two-wheeler motor vehicles is covered under IS 4151:2015. This standard specifies the materials, workmanship, finish, construction, and performance requirements for protective helmets (with or without lower face cover) used by two-wheeler riders on a daily basis. This standard's helmets are not intended for high-speed competitive events.

The standard specifies helmets in the sizes 500 mm, 520 mm, 540 mm, 560 mm, 570 mm, 580 mm, 600 mm, and 620 mm to match the head forms.

The standard specifies the shell, protective padding, comfort padding, retention system, metal parts, visor material, and construction requirements. The total weight of the helmet shall not exceed 1500 g. Other requirements for Dimensions, Peripheral vision, Workmanship, Impact absorption, Rigidity, Retention system, and Finish are also specified in the standard.

A helmet is one of the most important items of personal protective equipment used by motorcycle riders to protect themselves from the hazards of road driving. This standard has been designed to cover provisions for protective helmets used by motorcycle riders on a daily basis.

The basic design of the helmet shall be a hard outer shell with additional means of absorbing impact energy and a retention system. Earflaps and a neck curtain can be added to the protective helmet. A helmet's primary purpose is to protect the wearer's head from impact.

The following test shall be carried out to check the helmet's performance.

  • Rigidity Test
  • Dynamic Test of Retention System
  • Audibility Test
  • Retention Test of Helmet
  • Opening Angle Test
  • Flexibility of Peak

Each helmet must be clearly and indelibly marked with the manufacturer's name or trademark, size, year of manufacture, and helmet mass. A standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the helmet. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process during a visit to manufacturing premises.
