IS 5869:1970

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 5869:1970 for pillar taps.

This standard specifies the requirements for pillar taps used with wash basins on board ships. The nominal size of pillar taps must be 15 mm. The tap must be self-closing, spring-loaded, and non-concussive. The pillar tap's component parts must be made of brass, leaded tin bronze, or another corrosion-resistant alloy. Suitable grades of brass and leaded tin bronze are used, as specified in the standard.

Taps must be manufactured and built-in in accordance with standard specifications. On the handles, suitable indicating discs or marks must be provided to indicate whether the water tap is hot or cold. To prevent leakage through the leaver handle, adequate provision must be made using leather washers and glands. For cold and hot water taps, replaceable washers must always be provided. The outside surface of the body must be chromium plated and brightly polished.

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the standard. The assembled tap, including all component parts, must be capable of withstanding a hydraulic pressure of 20 kg/cm2 when applied internally for a minimum of two minutes without leakage or sweating.

Marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 5869:1970. Each pillar tap shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name and trade mark, and the tap may also be marked with an ISI mark. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
