BIS CERTIFICATION FOR MILD STEEL WIRE
IS 1673:1984

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 1673:1984 for Mild steel wire, cold heading quality.

This standard specifies the requirements for two grades of cold-drawn mild steel wire with diameters ranging from 1.60 to 12.50 mm, which are suitable for the cold heading and thread rolling processes used in the manufacture of machine screws.

IS 8910:1978 specifies the general requirements for the supply of mild steel wire cold heading quality. Unless otherwise agreed between the contracting parties, the manufacturer shall determine the steel manufacturing process. Steel must be supplied in either semi-killed or killed form. External and internal flaws such as pits, pores, pinholes, blisters, laps, grooves, cracks or flaws, shrink holes, and slag inclusions must be avoided. The steel wire when tested must meet the mechanical properties as specified in the standard. The chemical composition shall be as per specified standard.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the standard.

  • Chemical composition
  • Tensile test
  • Reverse torsion test
  • Crushing test
  • Dimensions and tolerances

Packing and Marking:

Each coil of wire must be compactly bound and fastened. Each coil of wire must be marked with the grade, wire size, date of manufacture, and manufacturer's trade mark or name. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
