BIS CERTIFICATION FOR OIL IMMERSED DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS
IS 1180 (PART 1):2014

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 1180 (Part 1):2014 for outdoor type oil immersed distribution transformers.

This standard covers the requirements and tests for oil-immersed, naturally air-cooled, three-phase, double-wound non-sealed type outdoor distribution transformers with ratings up to and including 2500 kVA for use on systems with nominal system voltages up to and including 33 KV.

This standard is intended to cover transformer-related technical provisions. Part 2 of this standard covers the requirements for sealed type outdoor distribution transformers with similar voltage and kVA ratings.

The primary winding must be connected delta and the secondary winding star in order to produce a positive phase displacement of 30 degrees from the primary to secondary vectors of the same phase. Transformer tanks must be strong enough to withstand the pressure that builds up in the tank. The transformer oil must meet the requirements of this standard.

Three high voltage and four low voltage outdoor type bushings with appropriate voltage and current ratings must be installed on the transformer. The transformer must be able to withstand the appropriate voltage class's power frequency and impulse test voltage.

The Firm must declare the transformer ratings that they intend to cover under the Licence. BO shall ensure that all Varieties covered by the Licence are tested in rotation during the License operation.

TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified.

  • General requirements Test
  • Type Test
  • Routine Test
  • Air Pressure Test
  • Special Test

Labelling and Marking:

Labelling and marking must be done in accordance with IS 1180 (part 1):2014. Each transformer must have a non-detachable rating plate made of a weatherproof material that is fitted in a visible position and displays the information specified in the standard.

The ISI mark must be applied to each transformer. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS issues a license based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
