BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT
IS 269:2015

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 269: 2015 for ordinary Portland cement.

This standard specifies the manufacture and the chemical and physical requirements of 33 grade ordinary Portland cement. Ordinary Portland cement is a hydraulic binding material made by combining the appropriate amount of Portland cement clinker, composite material, and gypsum. This cement has excellent binding properties that give strength to structural elements.

Ordinary Portland cement shall be made by thoroughly mixing calcareous and argillaceous and other silica, alumina, or iron oxide-containing materials, burning them at clinkering temperatures, and grinding the resulting clinker to produce cement that meets this specification.

Ordinary Portland cement must meet the physical and chemical requirements specified in the standard. The manufacturer must ensure that the cement meets the requirements of this standard.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Insoluble Residue
  • Loss of ignition
  • Fineness
  • Setting
  • Soundness
  • Compressive strength
  • Transverse strength test

A laboratory must be adequately maintained for the various tests to be performed according to the methods specified in the standard. The manufacturer must demonstrate that the cement meets the requirements of this standard.

The cement shall be packed in bags in accordance with standard. Each bag of cement must be legibly and permanently marked with the information as specified in the standard. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the cement. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
