BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PHTHALIC ANHYDRIDE TECHNICAL
IS 5158:1987

IS 5158:1987 covers Phthalic Anhydride, Technical. This standard specifies the requirements and sampling and test methods for phthalic anhydride, technical, suitable for industrial purposes.

The material may be solid or molten, and it must be in the shape of flakes, pellets, or crystals when solid and free of agglomerates, coloured or stained pieces, and other foreign substances.

When tested according to the method specified, the material must also meet the requirements given in the standard. The manufacturer will ensure that the material is handled and stored safely in accordance with the standards. Because of the material's moderate fire hazard and irritating properties, precaution must be taken when handling it. The material must not come into contact with the skin. Exposure to its vapour, fume, and dust must be kept to a minimum, and safety goggles must be worn to protect the eyes.

The following test shall be carried out as per the method prescribed in this standard.

• Colour of the molten material
• Free acidity
• Maleic Anhydride & other oxidisable impurities
• Ash
• Iron
• Naphthalene

Packing and Marking:

Packing and Marking shall be done in accordance with IS 5158:1987. The Standard mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each container of phthalic anhydride; technical provided that the product contained in each container on which this mark is applied meets all of the specification's requirements.

Each container must be labelled with the information as specified in the standard. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
