This Indian Standard specifies requirements, dimensions and performance of powder metallurgical metal powder porous oil bearings. Bearings are made from sintered metallic powders, usually bronze or iron alloyed with carbon and graphite, the porosity of which is controlled to permit oil impregnation. Hot-oil lubrication then causes the oil to flow to the bearing surface in use, with low friction and wear and a minimum of noise. The standard prescribes basic requirements such as moisture content, porosity, oil content, physical strength and dimensional accuracy. It also establishes test methods (carrying capacity, life, and capacity to retain oil) that describe ways of determining have been found to be reproducible. In addition, IS 3980:1982 imposes conditions for marking, packaging and sampling to trace history and performance.
