BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PORTLAND POZZOLANA CEMENT
IS 1489 (PART 1): 2015

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 1489 (Part 2) for Portland pozzolana cement – fly ash based.

The production, physical, and chemical requirements of Portland pozzolana cement - fly ash pozzolana are covered in this standard (Part 1). The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (Part 1) after the draft finalized by the Cement and Concrete Sectional Committee was approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council.

The standard specifies the chemical requirements of the cement as well as the physical requirements such as fineness, compressive strength, and soundness, among others, as well as the storage conditions for the cement.

Portland Pozzolana Cement is a type of Blended Cement made by either inter-grinding OPC clinker with gypsum and pozzolanic materials in specific proportions or grinding the OPC clinker, gypsum, and Pozzolanic materials such as fly ash separately and thoroughly blending them in specific proportions. The fly ash constituent must be no less than 15% and no more than 35% by mass of Portland pozzolana cement, according to the standard.

Pozzolana, such as fly ash, is essentially a siliceous material that, while having little or no cementitious properties on its own will react with calcium hydroxide at ambient temperature to form compounds with cementitious properties when finely divided and in the presence of water. Portland-pozzolana cement shall comply with the chemical and physical requirements specified in the standard.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for PPC fly ash-based cement.

  • Insoluble Residue
  • Loss of ignition
  • Fineness test
  • Soundness test
  • Setting time
  • Compressive Strength
  • Transverse Strength Test
  • Drying shrinkage
  • Chemical testing
  • Fly ash testing

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

The manufacturer must demonstrate that the cement meets the requirements of this standard. The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be printed on each bag or drum of Portland Pozzolana Cement- fly ash based or on the label applied to it, provided that the material in each bag or package to which the mark is thus applied meets the specification. The marking must be done in accordance with IS 1489 (Part 1). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
