BIS CERTIFICATION FOR RED PHOSPHORUS

Red phosphorus is covered under IS 2012:2006. This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing methods for red phosphorus, which is suited for the match industry and general industrial application.

The substance must be in the form of a dark red amorphous powder or granules that are primarily composed of phosphorus and it must be free from visible contamination. When tested using the procedures specified in the standard, the material must meet the requirements of the specification. When tested using the method defined, the substance must be proven to contain no white phosphorus.

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for red phosphorus.

  • Description
  • Free Moisture
  • Matter Soluble In water
  • Acidity
  • White Phosphorus
  • Copper
  • Iron

The following information must be legibly marked on each container:

  • The material's name
  • Manufacturer's name and, if applicable, a recognized trade-mark
  • The net mass of the substance in the container
  • Manufacturing month and year
  • Caution label 'Flammable' with the relevant symbol for labelling dangerous goods
  • The substance must be packed in air-tight containers.

Packing and marking must be done in accordance with Indian standards. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each packing, provided that the product thus marked meets all of the specifications' requirements. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
