BIS CERTIFICATION FOR RETRO-REFLECTIVE DEVICES
IS/ISO 6742 (PART 2): 2015

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS/ISO 6742 (Part 2): 2015 for Retro-reflective Devices.

This part 2 of ISO 6742 applies to retro-reflective devices used on bicycles intended for use on public roads. The BIS adopted this Indian standard (part 2), which is identical to ISO 6742/2-1985 issued by the ISO, on the recommendation of the bicycle sectional committee and with the approval of the transport engineering division council.

This standard specifies the photometric and physical requirements for retro-reflective devices to be installed on bicycles designed for use on public roads. Such retro reflective devices are effective in low-visibility conditions and at night in helping to make all road users aware of the presence of a cyclist.

Retro-Reflective Devices are classified according to IS/ISO 6742-2:2015 based on Product Type and Color, as given below:

  • Reflector
  • Retro-reflective Tyres (White, White/Yellow)
  • Retro-reflective Spokes (White)
  • Retro-reflective Spoke Cases (White)

The reflector must meet the photometric and colorimetric requirements of the standard. The CIL values for reflectors and retro-reflective tyres shall not be less than those specified in the standard. The reflector must include a distinct preferred assembly method to ensure that it can be mounted in the intended orientation with respect to the bicycle.

To cover that specific variety of Retro-Reflective Device, samples of each product type (Reflector, Retro-reflective Tyres, Retro-reflective Spokes, and Retro-reflective Spoke Cases) must be tested.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for retro-reflective devices.

  • Temperature resistance test
  • Colorimetric requirements
  • Photometric requirements,
  • Moisture Resistance test
  • Resistance to fuels
  • Impact test
  • Adhesion
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Water test
  • Resistance to corrosion

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

Each retro-reflective device must be permanently marked with the number of this part of ISO 6742, as well as the manufacturer's name or trademark. All production that complies with the Indian Standard and is covered by the license should bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). Marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 6742 (part 2): 2015. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
