Let’s take a closer look at IS 11946:1987 for Soft Magnetic Iron strips.

This standard specifies the requirements for cold-rolled soft magnetic iron strips used primarily for electromagnetic applications like relay yoke, armature, and the like in electrical machinery and apparatus.

The standard requires that all general requirements for the supply of cold-rolled soft magnetic iron strips be met. Strips may be supplied in coils or straight lengths, subject to mutual agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

The chemical composition of the material shall be as per standard. The material must be uniform in composition and micro and macrostructure, sound and free from physical defects or flaws both externally and internally. The strips as received must be smooth and flat, with no waviness, bow, bend, or buckle. The material in the coil must be uniformly treated, with uniform hardness and characteristics, so that it uncoils free from waviness.
