BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STAINLESS STEEL SHEETS AND STRIPS
IS 5522:2014

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 5522: 2014 for stainless steel sheets and strips for utensils. This standard specifies the requirements for stainless steel sheets and strips used in the manufacture of utensils.

The general requirements for material supply shall be in accordance with IS 1387: 1967. Unless otherwise specified in the order, the processes used to manufacture the steel are at the discretion of the manufacturer. Stainless steel sheets and strips must be free of harmful defects such as scales, rust, blister, lamination, cracked edges, and seams. The chemical composition of steel must meet standard requirements.

Tests:

The following test shall be done in accordance with method specified.

  • Tensile test
  • Hardness test
  • Bend test
  • Erichsen Cupping Test
  • Chemical Composition
  • Dimensional tolerances

Packing and Marking:

Packing and marking must be done in accordance with IS 5522. Sheets and strips must be securely packed in paper and wrapped in hoop iron with wooden battens underneath to prevent damage during transit. Every bundle or package of sheets, strips, and coils shall be legibly marked with paint displaying the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, mass, thickness, size, grade, and the cast number or identification marks, allowing the materials to be traced back to the cast or casts from which they are made. The material may also bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
