BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR PISTON PINS
IS 11952:1986

This standard specifies the requirements of chemical composition and mechanical properties of steels used in the production of piston pins. The piston pin is an essential component of the internal combustion engine. This standard was created in order to regulate the quality of steel used in the manufacture of piston pins.

The steel must be produced using a primary process and then refined using one of the refining processes such as argon rinsing, vacuum treatment, electro flux refining, or synthetic slag refining. The chemical composition of steel must meet the requirements of the standard. Mechanical properties in the heat-treated condition must be consistent with those given in Table 3 of the standard. When tested, the grain size must be fine grain, ideally 5-8.

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the standard.

• Chemical composition
• Mechanical properties
• Hardness
• Grain size
• Hardenability

Packing and Marking:

The bright bar steel must be treated with appropriate rust preventives and packaged in suitably wrapped bundles. Each wooden case must have a metal tag with the manufacturer's name and trademark, steel grade and size, and the cast number or any other identification mark. A standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of a manufacturer's manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
