IS 4224:1972

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4224:1972 for steel wires for staples, pins, and clips.

This standard specifies the requirements for three types of steel wire used for staples, pins, and clips.

The general requirements for material supply must be in accordance with 1387:1967. When analysed, the material must conform to the chemical composition specified in the standard. All finished wires must be well and cleanly drawn to the specified dimensions. The wire must be round and free of splits, surface flaws, rough, jagged, and imperfectly edges, and other harmful surface defects. The surface of the wire should be brightly shining. The wire must be supplied in the sizes specified by the buyer. The material shall be supplied in the finish agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer, which may be brightly drawn, copper-coated, galvanized, or tin coated.

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the specified standard.

  • Chemical composition
  • Freedom from defects
  • Sizes and tolerances
  • Tensile test
  • Reverse bend test

Each coil or bundle of wire must be compactly bound and fastened, and it must have a tag legibly marked with the type, finish, size, length, weight, and manufacturer's name. The material may also bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
