BIS CERTIFICATION FOR UPVC PIPES FOR WATER SUPPLIES
IS 4985: 2021

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 4985:2021 for Unplasticized PVC Pipes for Water Supplies.

IS 4985:2021 covers unplasticized PVC pipes for water supplies. This standard specifies the requirements for plain and socket-ended pipes for potable water supplies, including those for use with elastomeric sealing rings. This standard also applies to agricultural pipes.

This standard does not cover unplasticized PVC pipes used in agricultural pump suction and delivery lines, which are covered by IS 12231.

The pipes shall be classified by pressure ratings (working pressures) at 27°C as follows:

Class of pipe Working pressure
Class 1 0.25 MPa
Class 2 0.4 MPa
Class 3 0.6 MPa
Class 4 0.8 MPa
Class 5 1 MPa
Class 6 1.25 MPa

The material from which the pipe is made shall be primarily unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. Only those additives necessary to facilitate pipe manufacturing and the production of sound and durable pipe with good surface finish, mechanical strength, and opacity under use conditions may be added. The additives to be used must be selected from IS 10148 and dispersed uniformly. When tested in accordance with IS 4669, the composition must be based on PVC resin with a K-value of 64 or greater.

The pipe shall be subjected to the following test:

  1. Type test
  2. Acceptance test
  3. Reversion Test
  4. Test for opacity
  5. Vicat softening temperature test
  6. Sulphated Ash content test
  7. Hydrostatic pressure test
  8. Test for resistance to external blows

All pipes must be clearly and indelibly marked with the Manufacturer's name or trademark, outside diameter, class of pipe and pressure rating, and batch number as per specification.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each pipe. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
