BIS CERTIFICATION FOR WHEELS FOR PASSENGER CARS
IS 9436:2018

This standard specifies laboratory test methods and performance requirements for evaluating certain essential strength characteristics of passenger car wheels. The failure criteria for the wheel tests have also been specified in the standard.

For the purposes of GoL, wheel for Passenger Cars, Quadricycles, and Mini Goods Carriers are classified as follows according to IS 9436:2018:

1. Based on Material of Wheel
• Ferrous
• Aluminum
2. Based on Category of Wheel
• Disc Wheel
• Wheel with demountable Rim
3. Based on Usage
• Normal Highway Service
• Temporary Use

Wheels with the highest Load Rating for each Material and Wheel Rim Category for each Type of Usage shall be tested to cover the entire range of Wheels for that Material of Wheels. For the tests, only fully processed new wheels that are representative of the wheels intended for the vehicle will be used, and a single wheel may not be used for more than one test.

Tests

The Following two tests are covered for wheels:

1. Dynamic cornering fatigue test
2. Dynamic radial fatigue test

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

Wheels must be labelled with the manufacturer's name or trademark, as well as the size designation. All production that complies with the Indian Standard and is covered by the license should bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
