Extension Announced Under Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety Regulation
Published Date: June 12, 2025
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has officially issued the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Amendment Order, 2025, which brings a critical update for manufacturers, importers, and stakeholders dealing with machinery and electrical equipment in India.
Key Highlights of the Amendment:
Implementation Date Extended:
- The enforcement date for the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024 has been extended to 1st September, 2026.
- This is a change from the earlier plan which specified implementation one year from the date of publication of the original 2024 Order.
Applicability of the Order:
- The Regulation will now apply to all machines and electrical equipment listed in the First Schedule of the Order starting 1st September, 2026.
- Assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components listed in the First Schedule will be brought under the ambit of the regulation from a separately notified date, which will be announced by the Central Government through a Gazette notification.
Legal Backing:
- The amendment has been made under the powers conferred by Sections 16, 17, and 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016, in consultation with BIS.
What This Means for You:
- Manufacturers & Importers: You now have extended time to align your products and processes with the safety requirements laid down in the Order.
- Compliance Planning: Start evaluating the equipment listed in the First Schedule and initiate steps for BIS conformity assessment if not already done.
- Component Makers: Stay alert for future notifications regarding the implementation date for components and sub-assemblies.
Final Note:
The Government’s decision to extend the timeline reflects a balanced approach, allowing the industry ample time for preparation while keeping consumer and workplace safety at the forefront.
