Extension of Exemption Period for Cloud-Implemented IP Routers and Wi-Fi CPEs from Security Certification

The National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS), under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has issued a significant update concerning the security certification requirements for cloud-based networking equipment.

In continuation of the earlier notifications dated 29th November 2024 and the subsequent addendum dated 13th December 2024, the NCCS has now officially extended the exemption period for cloud-implemented IP Routers and Wi-Fi Customer Premises Equipment (CPEs) from mandatory security certification.

As per the latest Office Memorandum dated 7th July 2025, the exemption from security testing has now been extended until 31st March 2026.

This decision comes after careful consideration and is aimed at providing additional time to stakeholders to comply with the necessary security certification protocols under the Indian telecom ecosystem. The extension is applicable only to IP Routers and Wi-Fi CPEs that are implemented through cloud-based solutions.

What This Means for Stakeholders:
  • Manufacturers and service providers of cloud-based IP Routers and Wi-Fi CPEs can continue operations without the immediate requirement of security certification until the extended deadline.
  • This offers additional time for compliance, ensuring smoother transitions and uninterrupted market availability.
  • However, stakeholders are advised to proactively prepare for eventual certification, as future extensions are not guaranteed.
