BIS Certification for Milk and Milk Products
BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme for Milk and Milk Products: BIS has developed a novel and first-of-its-kind certification scheme for milk and milk products, considering the perishable nature and short shelf-life of milk and milk products, as well as the extensive cold-chain involved in the production and supply of milk and milk products.
The Conformity Assessment Scheme for Milk and Milk Products focuses on the certification of milk and milk products along with certification of process requirements and the Food Safety Management System (FSMS) implemented by the dairy unit to improve safety and quality.
The scheme was jointly developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards and the National Dairy Development Board. It aims to provide a comprehensive approach to the quality ecosystem in the dairy and milk production sectors.
This scheme covers the requirements of conformity assessment of milk and milk products for the grant of a BIS license in accordance with Scheme-IX of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) (Sixth Amendment) Regulations, 2021, to use Standard Mark for goods and articles conforming to Indian Standard, combined with the conformity of management system to Indian Standard and conformity of process requirements.

One of the advantages of this certification scheme is that it provides single-point quality certification for milk and milk products. This comprehensive certification scheme covers all elements of a food safety management system in accordance with IS/ISO 22000, as well as product certification in accordance with relevant Indian standards and process certification in accordance with NDDB's quality mark guidelines. Under this scheme, the Bureau may grant a licence to a dairy unit to use a standard mark. All Dairy units/organizations must obtain BIS certification for milk and milk products to confirm that milk products comply with the relevant standard.
