Important Update: Extension of Annual Return Filing Deadline for Battery Producers for FY 2024-25
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, has issued a crucial update for all producers of batteries under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. In a recent order dated 10th July 2025, the Ministry has extended the deadline for filing Annual Returns for FY 2024-25 by three months, moving the due date from 30th June 2025 to 30th September 2025.
This extension comes in response to a formal request from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) via their letter dated 07th July 2025, citing the need for additional time for producers to comply with the rules effectively.
As per Rule 4(11) of the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, producers are mandated to submit annual returns on the batteries collected, recycled, or refurbished to meet their Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). These returns must be submitted in Form 3 to the CPCB and the concerned State Pollution Control Board (SPCB).
Additionally, under Rule 14(6) of the same rules and notification S.O. 4669(E) dated 25.10.2023, the Central Government has the authority to relax timelines up to nine months, facilitating smoother implementation of the compliance process.
