Extended Deadline for Filing Quarterly and Annual Returns Under E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, Until August 31, 2024
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has recently extended the deadline for filing quarterly and annual returns under the E-waste (Management) Rules, 2022. This blog highlights the implications of this extension and its significance for stakeholders in the e-waste management ecosystem.
Understanding the Extension Request
On June 26, 2024, the CPCB highlighted representations from industry associations advocating for extension of the filing deadline. The original deadline for filing returns for the financial year 2023-24 was set as June 30, 2024.
CPCB’s Request to the Ministry
Responding to the concerns of the industry, the CPCB requested the Ministry to extend the deadline till August 31, 2024. The extension is aimed at facilitating activities related to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) certificate generation and transfer on the EPR portal.
Ministry’s response
After careful deliberations, the Ministry has officially extended the deadline for filing annual and quarterly returns, as per Rule 9A of the E-Waste (Management) Amendment Rules, 2024, up to August 31, 2024. This extension provides additional time to registered entities to comply with regulatory requirements.
Implications for stakeholders
Producers, importers and brand-owners (PIBOs): This extension provides relief and flexibility to PIBOs in meeting their reporting obligations. It allows accurate and timely submission of returns, thereby enhancing compliance with the E-Waste (Management) Rules.
Industry associations
This extension reflects a responsive approach by regulatory authorities to address industry concerns. It underscores the importance of collaborative engagement between regulators and stakeholders in promoting effective waste management practices.

As stakeholders adapt to the revised timelines, active participation and compliance remain essential to achieve environmental stewardship in the e-waste management landscape.
