Why Is BIS Certification Required for Furniture?
BIS certification for furniture signifies compliance with Indian Standards and ensures quality and safety as prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the “Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025.” India’s furniture market is valued at approximately $25–26 billion, making it a significant contributor to urbanization and housing growth. The demand for modular and premium furniture is high. To ensure proper quality, furniture products are tested in BIS-recognized laboratories and the manufacturing facilities are inspected. Under Scheme-I, BIS grants a license to manufacturers to use the ISI mark on notified furniture products.
Foreign and domestic manufacturers who have obtained BIS licenses have reported up to 70% growth in the sales of their premium, office, and residential furniture. Products bearing the ISI mark build strong brand trust and reflect a high level of customer satisfaction.
For furniture certification consultancy, Aleph India has worked with major foreign manufacturers from countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Italy, and Germany who intend to sell their products in India. Some company names are available on Aleph’s website under the BIS Audit section for reference. A large number of domestic manufacturers around 65% from North India, South India, and metro cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi have also contacted through calls and the website and have availed consultancy services for obtaining BIS licenses.

What type of test is required for BIS Furniture Certification?
All six standards as per Indian Standards have been specified for safety and performance tests which are as follows:
BIS Certification Process for Furniture
Know the complete step-by-step process required for manufacturers to obtain BIS certification and ISI Mark for their furniture products.
Step 1 - Identify the Applicable Indian Standard
Start by certifying your furniture product to the Indian Standard that is notified under the Quality Control Order (QCO). Check the extent of the standard (dimensions, materials and type of construction) carefully. One of the most frequent errors that may result in the delay or rejection of the application is the choice of the wrong standard.
Step 2- Prepare Technical and Business Documentation
Prepare all the required papers like business registrations, factory layout, list of machinery, quality control process, raw material specification and detailed product drawing. Making sure that the documents have been prepared in the required BIS format will avoid any objections or deficiency notices when being evaluated.
Step 3 — Submit Application on the ManakOnline Portal
Register the BIS application in the ManakOnline portal and submit all the product details, manufacturing unit and the applicable Indian Standard. It is also at this point that an applicable application fee is paid. The integrity and thoroughness are necessary in the processes.
Step 4 - Product Testing at BIS-Recognized Laboratory
Send samples of the products to a BIS-approved lab. Parameters used in the evaluation usually comprise parameters like strength, stability, durability, safety and dimensional accuracy, as per applicable Indian Standard. The certification process is incomplete without the test reports.
Step 5 - BIS Review of Documents
BIS authorities look at the filed application and documents and test reports. Raised queries or deficiencies should be resolved in good time so as to prevent delays in approvals.
Step 6 — Factory Inspection
A BIS officer will visit the manufacturing facility and will inspect the facility to determine how the facility is producing and how the raw materials are being controlled, in-process quality inspections, and the final product testing arrangements. Adequate planning is the most important in achieving a hassle-free inspection process.
Step 7- BIS Licence and ISI Mark Grant
BIS issues the certification licence under Scheme-I once all the requirements are met satisfactorily. This would enable the manufacturer to stamp the ISI Mark on the products and sell them in India legally.
Step 8 Surveillance and Renewal of licence
After certification, BIS conducts periodic surveillance checks and can sample the market to do tests. The licence should be renewed according to the prescribed timelines and any change in the design of the product, materials or manufacturing process should be immediately reported to BIS.
The process of BIS certification of furniture normally takes a period of 3 to 6 months before receiving the ISI Mark. The initial phase, involving testing and documentation of the products, can be completed in 4-8 weeks, depending on the type of product and laboratory schedule. It is followed by BIS inspection, inspection of the factory and licence which can take an extra 8 to 16 weeks. Depending on the accuracy of the application and compliance readiness, timelines might be different. The process is expedited with professional help of Aleph India by ensuring documentation, coordination of laboratories and adequacy in dealing with BIS queries and inspections.
