BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HYDROPHOBIC PORTLAND CEMENT
IS 8043:1991

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 8043:1991 for hydrophobic Portland cement.

IS 8043:1991 covers hydrophobic Portland cement. This standard specifies the manufacturing and chemical and physical requirements of hydrophobic Portland cement.

Hydrophobic cement shall be produced by intimately mixing calcareous and argillaceous materials and other silica, alumina, or iron oxide bearing materials, burning them at clinkering temperatures, and grinding the resulting clinker with natural or chemical gypsum and small amounts of a hydrophobic agent.

Admixtures in hydrophobic cement reduce the wetting ability of cement grains. Acidol, naphthensoap, oxidized petrolatum, and other hydrophobic admixtures are common. These chemicals form a layer on the cement particle, preventing water from mixing and starting the hydration process during transportation or storage. The hydrophobic nature of cement would enable it to be stored for longer periods in highly wet climatic conditions. This cement can be used to build water structures like dams, spillways, and other submerged structures.

IS 269: 1989 specifies the chemical requirements for hydrophobic Portland cement. When tested according to the methods specified, hydrophobic Portland cement shall meet the chemical and physical requirements specified in the standard. The manufacturer must ensure that the cement meets the requirements of this standard. A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

tests

The following test shall be carried out for hydrophobic Portland cement in accordance with the method specified.

  1. Fineness
  2. Setting time
  3. Compressive Strength
  4. Transverse Strength Test
  5. Soundness
  6. Chemical requirement

Packing of hydrophobic Portland cement shall be done as per IS 8043:1991. Labelling and marking shall be done in accordance with the standard. The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be printed on each bag or drum of hydrophobic Portland cement or on the label applied to it, provided that the material in each bag or package to which the mark is thus applied meets the specification. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
