BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PORTLAND SLAG CEMENT
IS 455:2015

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 455:2015 for Portland Slag cement.

Portland slag cement is covered under IS 455:2015. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (Fourth Revision) on October 30, 2015, after the Civil Engineering Division Council approved the Cement and Concrete Sectional Committee's final draft. This standard specifies the manufacturing process and the chemical and physical requirements of Portland slag cement.

Portland slag cement shall be made by mixing Portland cement clinker, gypsum, and granulated slag in the appropriate quantities and grinding the mixture to get a thorough and intimate mixing of the constituents. It can also be made by grinding Portland cement clinker, gypsum, and granulated slag separately and then mixing them thoroughly. The resultant product is Cement with physical qualities similar to standard Portland cement. The slag constituent of the Portland slag cement must be not less than 25% and no more than 65 percent.

Portland cement clinker used in the manufacture of Portland slag cement must meet all of the chemical requirements specified in IS 269:2015 for 33 grade ordinary Portland cement. The Portland slag cement must meet the physical requirements in accordance with IS 455:2015.

It has a low heat of hydration and is significantly more resistant to soils and water. It has high levels of sulphates of alkali metals, alumina, and iron, as well as acidic waters, and can thus be used advantageously for marine works.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for Portland slag cement:

  1. Chemical Test
    • Magnesium oxide
    • Sulper trioxide
    • Loss of ignition
    • Insoluble residue
    • Total chloride content
    • Alkalies
  2. Physical Test
    • Fineness
    • Soundness
    • Setting time
    • Compressive strength

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

The manufacturer must demonstrate that the cement meets the requirements of this standard. The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be printed on each bag or drum of Portland slag Cement on the label applied to it, provided that the material in each bag or package to which the mark is thus applied meets the specification. The marking must be done in accordance with IS 455:2015. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
