BIS CERTIFICATION FOR PORTLAND POZZOLANA CEMENT
IS 1489 (PART 2)

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let's take a closer look at IS 1489 (Part 2) for Portland pozzolana cement - Calcined clay based.

Portland pozzolana cement - Calcined clay based are covered under IS 1489 (Part 2). This Standard (Part 2) addresses the manufacturing, physical, and chemical requirements of Portland-pozzolana cement made from calcined clay pozzolana or a calcined clay mixture.

Portland Pozzolana Cement is a type of Blended Cement made by either inter-grinding Ordinary Portland Cement clinker with gypsum and pozzolanic materials in specific proportions or grinding the OPC clinker, gypsum, and Pozzolanic materials such as fly ash separately and thoroughly blending them in specific proportions.

PPC improves workability, has less segregation and bleeding, increased water-tightness, and has a lower tendency for lime to leach out. It generates less hydration heat and offers more resistant to the attack of aggressive water containing sulphates and chlorides. It increases the durability of structures as well as the strength of concrete over time by making it more corrosion resistant and impermeable. It protect against alkali-aggregate reaction in concrete.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out for PPC Calcined Clay based cement.

  • Fineness test
  • Soundness test
  • Setting time
  • Compressive Strength
  • Transverse Strength Test
  • Drying shrinkage
  • Chemical testing
  • Fly ash testing
  • Calcined clay testing

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

The manufacturer must demonstrate that the cement meets the requirements of this standard. The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be printed on each bag or drum of Portland Pozzolana Cement – Calcined clay based or on the label applied to it, provided that the material in each bag or package to which the mark is thus applied meets the specification. The marking must be done in accordance with IS 1489. (Part 2). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
