BIS CERTIFICATION FOR LOW HEAT PORTLAND CEMENT
IS 12600

IS 12600 covers low heat Portland cement. This standard covers the manufacturing, chemical, and physical requirements of low heat Portland cement for use in applications requiring low heat of hydration, such as mass concrete for dams. This cement contains a low percentage of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) and a higher percentage of dicalcium silicate (46 percent) (C2S).

Low heat Portland cement shall be produced by intimately mixing calcareous and argillaceous materials and other silica, alumina, or iron oxide bearing materials, burning them at a controlled temperature, and grinding the resulting clinker to produce cement capable of meeting this specification. After burning, no material other than gypsum or water or both and not more than one percent of air-entraining agents shall be added.

Low heat Portland cement shall meet the chemical and physical requirements specified in the standard when tested in accordance with the methods specified.

Tests

The following tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

• Fineness
• Soundness
• Setting time test
• Compressive Strength
• Heat of hydration

A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.

The manufacturer must demonstrate that the cement meets the requirements of this standard. The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be printed on each bag or drum of low heat Portland cement on the label applied to it, provided that the material in each bag or package to which the mark is thus applied meets the specification. The marking must be done in accordance with IS 12600. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process.
