BEE CERTIFICATION

BEE CERTIFICATION

BEE CERTIFICATION

A BEE-rating certificate is a document that indicates the product’s level of BEE compliance. A level one contributor is the highest achievable status and the lowest level of BEE compliance is level eight. The higher the BEE status level, the stronger a company is in relation to its competition. Companies should aim to achieve a higher status level annually.

ABOUT THE BEE STAR RATING PROGRAM

BEE sets the standards and label for marking star-rating of various appliances. They also define the testing and certification procedures for all kinds of appliances. When manufacturers make a new model and they want to get their product certified, they do the tests for their appliance as per the procedures designed by BEE and apply for star certification with the data from the tests. Based on the test data BEE provides a star rating for appliances. BEE keeps on refining the standards and certification procedures periodically.

WHY DOES A PRODUCT NEED A BEE-RATING CERTIFICATE?

Product needs a BEE-rating certificate to prove their level of performance and electricity consumption status. The certificate includes indicators about product efficiency and performance as per electricity consumption.

The certificate is valid for a year and renewed annually based on evidence submitted for BEE implementation during the period under measurement. Companies can use their BEE-rating certificate to claim product quality among other suppliers. If you don’t have a BEE-rating certificate, your customers will look for a BEE compliant supplier. It is important for companies to aim to achieve and maintain a level one status to remain competitive.

  3. They certify Energy Managers and Energy Auditors who can perform energy audits.
  4. They develop norms for energy consumption.
As part of their promotional activities they do:
  • Create promotional programs for energy efficiency, star-rating and other awareness programs.
  • Arrange and organize trainings for people who can do energy efficiency projects.
  • Develop testing and certification procedures and promote testing facilities.
  • Promote innovative financing of energy efficiency projects
  • Give financial assistance to institutions for promoting efficient use of energy and its conservation
  • Prepare educational curriculum on efficient use of energy and its conservation
  • Q/A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
    1

What is BEE? And How do we define energy efficiency?

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Power, Government of India established under provisions of the Energy Conservation Act 2001, to promote efficient use of energy and its conservation. The Government of India set up Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) on 1st March 2002. Energy efficiency simply means using less energy to perform the same task that is, eliminating energy waste.

    2

What is the Role of BEE?

The role of BEE is to co-ordinate with designated consumers, designated agencies and other organizations and recognizes, identify and utilize the existing resources and infrastructure, in performing the functions assigned to it under the Energy Conservation Act. The Energy Conservation Act provides for regulatory and promotional functions.

    3

What is the Mission of BEE?

The mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to develop policy and strategies with a thrust on self- regulation and market principles, within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 (EC Act) with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy. This will be achieved with active participation of all stake holders, resulting in accelerated and sustained adoption of energy efficiency in all sectors of the economy.

    4

What are the roles and responsibilities of Bureau of Energy Efficiency?

The mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles, within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy.

    5

    What are bee standards?

The Standards & Labeling Programme is one of the major thrust areas of BEE. A key objective of this scheme is to provide the consumer an informed choice about the energy saving and thereby the cost saving potential of the relevant marketed product.

    6

What is the purpose of energy conservation Act 2001?

An Act to provide for efficient use of energy and its conservation and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. 1. Short title, extent and commencement. This Act may be called the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

    7

Why is it so important to save energy?

Energy is not free. The grown-ups in your house pay for all the electricity you use. So wasting energy is the same as wasting money – and we know that’s not a good idea! Wasting energy isn’t good for the environment either. Most of the energy sources we depend on, like coal and natural gas, can’t be replaced – once we use them up, they’re gone forever. Another problem is that most forms of energy can cause pollution.

    8

What kind of lamps are more energy efficient?

We should use LED lamps and Tubes, which are most energy efficient these days. Existing Tube lights should be replaced by LED Tubes. Even Sodium vapor lamps or mercury lamps used in street lights can also be replaced by LED street lights.

    9

What is the objective of the BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) for recommending optimum temperature setting of air conditioners?

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Ministry of Power) has issued the guidelines to major commercial establishments with the objective of conserving energy through optimum temperature settings for the Air Conditioners, within the comfort zone /chart.It is estimated that changing the temperature from conventional 20-21 degree Celsius can result in approximately at 24 per cent of energy savings

    10

What is Standard and Labeling Scheme?

Standards and Labeling (S&L) program was initiated in the XIth five year plan with the key objective of providing consumers an informed choice regarding the energy savings and the cost saving potential of various energy consuming appliances.

    11

For how many appliances S&L scheme covers the standards & labeling program?

S&L scheme covers the star labeling program for 28 appliances, out of which 10 appliances are under mandatory regime and remaining 18 appliances are under voluntary regime.

    12

What are the benefits of S&L Scheme?
