BIS CERTIFICATION FOR AC MOTOR CAPACITORS
IS 2993:1998

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 2993:1998 for AC Motor Capacitors.

This standard covers motor capacitors intended for connection to the windings of asynchronous motors supplied from a single-phase system with a frequency up to and including 100 Hz and capacitors intended for connection to three-phase asynchronous motors so that these motors can be supplied from a single-phase system.

This standard applies to impregnated or unimpregnated capacitors with dielectrics of paper, plastic film, or a combination of both, metallized or with metal-foil electrodes, and rated voltages up to and including 660 V. IEC 252, which is currently under consideration, will cover electrolytic motor start capacitors.

The goal of this standard is:

  • To develop uniform rules for performance, testing, and rating
  • To develop specific safety rules
  • To provide installation and operation instructions

The capacitor must meet the standard's quality, safety, and performance requirements. The requirements for specific applications must be met.

TESTS

The tests are classified into two types:

  1. Type tests
  2. Routine tests

Type tests: Type tests are intended to demonstrate the soundness of the capacitor's design and its suitability for operation under the conditions specified in this standard. If approval is required, type tests are performed by the manufacturer and the testing authority. These tests may be conducted under the supervision of an appropriate authority, which will issue a certified record and type approval.

Routine tests: Before delivery, the manufacturer must perform routine tests on each capacitor.

The Firm must declare the types of Capacitors that they intend to cover under the licence. The scope of the license may be limited based on the Manufacturer's manufacturing and testing capabilities.

Labelling and Marking:

Labelling and marking must be done in accordance with IS 2993:1998 / IEC 252:1993. The capacitor must be labelled with the information specified in the standard.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on the product provided that the material so marked meets all specification requirements. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS issues a licence based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
