BIS CERTIFICATION FOR AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLES TUBES
IS 13098:2012

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 13098: 2012 for automotive vehicles- Tubes for pneumatic tyres.

Automotive vehicles Tubes for pneumatic tyres are covered under IS13098. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard (First Revision) after the Transport Engineering Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Automotive Tyres, Tubes, and Rims Sectional Committee.

This standard specifies the requirements for pneumatic tyre tubes for automotive vehicles belonging to the L1, L2, L5, M, N, and T vehicle categories as defined in IS 14272: 2011 'Automotive vehicles — Types, terminology.' The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) must be applied to each tube, and the manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

The inner tube is a flexible tube container that expands until it bursts when inflated with compressed air unless the expansion is restrained by the tyre, which acts as a casing. The tubes must be made of an appropriate rubber compound, vulcanized to an endless annular ring shape, and have a valve or spud conforming to IS 9081.

The tubes will be classified into two categories:

  1. Class A: Butyl IS rubber/Halo-butyl rubber, and its derivatives and blends
  2. Class B: Natural rubber and its derivatives and blends

Each tube attached valve must be inflated to round out and tested in water for leakage. One of the most significant advantages of using pneumatic tyres is their ability to absorb uneven terrain, and this result in a smoother ride with less bumping and shaking. They will also have a thicker thread, which will provide traction when driving over loose and uneven surfaces.

Tests

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Thickness
  • Elongation
  • Strength of splice
  • Ageing test
  • Air tightness

Labelling and marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 13098: 2012. Each tube may also be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of a manufacturer's manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
