BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4431:1978 for Carbon and Carbon manganese free-cutting steels.This standard specifies the requirements for wrought carbon and carbon-manganese free-cutting steels supplied in the form of blooms, billets, and bars. IS 1387:1967 specifies the general requirements for the supply of carbon and carbon manganese free-cutting steels.

Unless otherwise agreed to in the order, the process used to make the steel and the product shall be left to the manufacturer's discretion, but the steel shall be either semi-killed or killed. The material must be free of internal and surface defects. The purchaser and the manufacturer must mutually agree upon the method for evaluating internal defects at the time of inquiry and order.

The ladle analysis of steels must meet the requirements specified in the standard. Steel, whether hot rolled, normalised, cold drawn, or hardened and tempered, must meet the mechanical properties specified in the standard. Dimensional tolerances for rolled steel products must conform to either grade 1 or grade 2 of IS 3739:1972.
