BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CARBON STEEL CAST BILLET INGOTS IS 2831:2012

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 2831:2012 for carbon steel cast billet ingots, billets, blooms, and slabs for re-rolling into structural steel (ordinary quality).

This standard specifies the requirements of carbon steel cast billet ingots, billets, blooms, slabs, and semi-rolled steel products that must be re-rolled into low tensile structural steel (ordinary quality). This standard's requirements shall also apply to billets (including round shapes), blooms, and slabs produced by the continuous casting process.

IS 8910 specifies general requirements for the supply of steel. The manufacturing process for steel is left to the manufacturer's discretion. If necessary, it may be followed by secondary refining. Steel must be killed or semi-killed. The chemical composition must adhere to the standards specified.

The rolled billets, blooms, and slabs, as well as the continuously cast billets, blooms, and slabs must be cleanly rolled/cast into the mutually agreed/preferred dimensions specified in the standard. Cast billet ingots shall be supplied free of harmful defects such as segregation, piping, cracks, inclusions, and blow-holes through the appropriate top and bottom discard and dressing, or supplied with suitable surface dressing only, without top and bottom discard if mutually agreed upon by the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Tests:

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the specified standard.

  • Chemical Compositions
  • Macro examination
  • Dimensions & Tolerances
  • Freedom from defects

Marking:

Unless otherwise agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer, the ends of cast billet ingot, billet, and bloom (including continuously cast) shall be painted with a suitable colour and legibly stamped or painted with the cast number, as well as the manufacturer's name or trademark. All production that complies with Indian Standards and is covered by the license should bear the Standard Mark. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
