BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CARBON STEEL SHEET
IS 9485:1980

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 9485:1980 for Cold reduced and hot rolled carbon steel sheet.

This standard covers cold-reduced and hot-rolled carbon steel sheets of commercial and drawing qualities for porcelain enamelling, where the sheet surface and base metal chemistry are critical.

Hot rolled or cold reduced carbon steel sheets shall be classified into three grades: A, B, and C.

Steel made by the open hearth, electric, duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes shall be used to make the sheet. According to a mutual agreement, hot-rolled sheets can be supplied as rolled, annealed, pickled, and oiled. It should be free from harmful defects.

The finished sheets must be free from harmful defects such as scale, rust, blisters, laminations, pitting, cracked edges, and other flaws. General requirements for the supply of hot rolled and cold reduced carbon steel sheets shall conform to the standard. The testing method shall be specified in the standard, and the material must conform to the standard requirements.

Tests

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Bend Test
  • Cupping test
  • Strain age embrittlement test

Packing and Marking:

Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 9485:1980. Every bundle or package of the sheet shall be marked with information as specified in the standard. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
