BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CARBURIZING STEEL
IS 5489:1975

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 5489:1975 Carburizing Steel for use in Bearing Industry.

This standard specifies the requirements for carburizing steel bars, tubes, wire rods, and wire for use in the bearing industry.

The steel must be fully killed and produced using an electric or other process approved by the purchaser. Each ingot must undergo sufficient reduction and discard to ensure that it is free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects.

The material can be conditioned to remove harmful surface defects by machining, scarfing, chipping, or grinding at a suitable stage during reduction from ingot to finished size.

The chemical composition must conform to the standard. The steel must be supplied hot rolled, hot rolled and annealed, or cold finished. The steel must be free of excessive scale, surface irregularities, and internal stresses that could interfere with the machining process. The material must have a well-formed and uniformly distributed pearlite structure and be free of potentially harmful ferrite banding.

TESTS

Tests shall be done in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Microstructure
  • Hardness
  • Grain size
  • Inclusion content
  • Surface defect
  • Dimensional tolerances

Packing and marking:

The standard mark (ISI Mark) shall be applied to the material, and the marking and packing shall be done in accordance with IS 5489:1975, provided that the product thus marked and packed meets all of the standard's requirements. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
