BIS CERTIFICATION FOR CASE HARDENING STEELS
IS 4432:1988

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 4432:1988 for case hardening steels.

IS 4432:1988 covers Case Hardening Steels. This standard specifies the technical delivery requirements for case-hardening wrought low carbon unalloyed and alloyed steel bars, billets, rods, and finished forgings. In general, the steels are intended for forgings and the fabrication of case-hardened machines or automobile parts.

Case hardening of parts refers to parts that have been carburized or carbonitrided on their surface and then hardened to produce a high degree of hardness in the surface zone while the core material is relatively tough.

The general requirements for material supply shall conform to IS 1387:1967. Unless otherwise agreed to in the order, the processes used to manufacture the steel and the product shall be left to the manufacturer's discretion, but the steel shall be fully killed.

The material must be free from surface and internal flaws that could impair the forgeability of the steel or have an adverse effect on the mechanical properties of the parts. The recommended temperature for hot working and heat treatments aimed at controlling hardness, machinability, shearability, and other properties is specified in the standard.

TESTS

  • Chemical composition
  • Hardness test
  • Ultrasonic test
  • Mechanical properties
  • Grain size
  • Dimensional tolerances
  • Additional tests

Marking:

All bars shall be marked with material designation, heat number and name or trademark of the manufacturer. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

Conclusion:

If a product falls under the scope of the BIS Conformity Assessment Scheme, All the manufacturers, importers, and foreign entities must obtain BIS ISI Certification. The Bureau may cancel the License if the product fails to meet certification requirements.
